    breeding..

    does it just happen?
do yo ukeep just one male and one female or do you cut the good ole' boy out with more than one girl at a time? i removed the two youngest females as i know they arent "of age" (weight really) yet and our new male (whos yet to be named) is in with the girls. he has been in quarentine a week and hes in great shape.. hes been kinda nibbling the girls a bit but no real "Action"

so what do you think? i have NO IDEA what the girls ovulation is like, and ive heard thats typical of girls hiding their heats.

Female rats go into heat about every 4 or 5 days. Rat breeding is often and VERY quick. Usually they'll squeek a bit here or there but it's just a really fast hop on, hop off thing so it's easy to miss. Just watch for the female to develop a distinct pear shaped abdomen and you'll know the male did his job.

sounds good.. ill keep an eye on our older girls. i figured the buck could spend a couple days with the girls and ill pull him out and put him back in his enclosure. i have no intrest in breeding the two babys girls, not only are they not old or big enough they are kinda funny in the personality department. not very friendly, keep to themselves, a bit nippy and i dont want to breed that into our rats. i might rehome them for that reason alone.

i do have only two snakes, but ive also spoken to a friend of mine who has numerous snakes (including the corn i had yesterday) and he would take some babys from me at various ages, not only that i would like to possibly keep a nice looking boy to keep our ONE male company. so its not just for me

    Re: breeding..

Oh, and I now have 25-30 pinkies... from only 2 girls, and I felt a bit overwhelmed, because were only holding back four, and the rest will be fed off within a few weeks, but we also have 8 snakes, going on 10 and the end of the month here. I just wonder if your going to breed only once in a while and freeze them? I figure that would be the best thing to do for 2 snakes. I only keep frozen ratties for about 4 months, because after that they just start getting pretty nasty.

You need to leave him with the girls for at least a week. Rats go into heat every 4-5 days so you need to cover that entire period or you risk them not get pregnant.
