Re: cage top covering
when i did mine i laid down 3 layers of tin foil, then duct taped the 4 sides, and worked my way covering every inch of tin foil with duct tape. then took a knife and cut away the excess.

well all I have is black duct tape. do I need to buy silver for better heat retention? I took some saran wrap and put a single layer on top with black duct tape on the edges to hold it in place

Black duct tape will work, its stated in the FAQ on a sticky in this forum for sealing glass cages to use black duct tape.
I used same as Kagez28, 3 layers of foil, and two layers of duct tape and made it look pretty clean cut with a exacto knife. Cut a 4x4 or so square for my heat lamp and ventilation.
Holds temperature perfect, and humidity as well.

my biggest worry is if I cut a hole for lamp should I leave the screen there? or cut that out too?

Definitely leave the screen! You don't want an exposed heat source available to burn your snake!
Oh, and by the way, I used clear packaging tape to secure my saran wrap to the lids of my tanks.

Making it more difficult then it is. If you cut carefully you can basically line the entire lid with foil and duct tape, and use a razor or something to cut a square out without tearing up the screen lid. Or lay one layer at a time of foil.
Check out the sticky, has pictures and everything.
