    Ranco ETC-111000 vs. Johnson A-419

    hello all,

im looking into purchasing a new thermostat from reptilebasics and a lot of people are telling me ranco and johnson are good brands to go get..but what exactly are the differences and similarities? if anyone has any first hand experience with these thermostats i'd appreciate it if you could tell me a little about them.

Re: Ranco ETC-111000 vs. Johnson A-419

Both are non-proportional thermostats (they cut off and on) doubt there is any difference in the way both are working, they are just from different manufacturers but basically the same type of thermostat

I use ranco as back-up thermostat and also as primary thermostat for the quarantine and it works great, can't tell you about the other one as I never used it.

no major differences, both have about the same accuracy and are built similiar. i prefer the ranco.

I use ranco as well as Helix and Herpstat - depending on the planned use. I've never tried a Johnson.

once you have a johnson you'll never go back. (johnson is my last name)...

i really do like the johnson control better, mostly because of the size.other then that they are pretty much the same, except for the johnson control being a little smaller. if size doesn't matter to you then either one works as good as the other.

Re: Ranco ETC-111000 vs. Johnson A-419

We use Rancos and Johnsons and both seem to regulate temperature equally well. The Johnson has temperature offset (night drop) capability and to my knowledge the Ranco does not. The Johnson also has a sensor failure operation, where you can elect to turn the power off if a sensor failure is detected. The temperature differential feature is one area where the Ranco seems to have an advantage. When the Johnson is set to a 1 degree differential, the temp must drop 2 degrees before the power is turned on. With the Ranco, the power is turned on after the temp drops 1 degree.

If you're definitely going with an on/off thermstat, I recommend the Johnson over the Ranco. You will probably pay a few bucks more for it, but in my opinion it's worth it.
