    Update on my little girl

well i got my girl about a month ago at a reptile show in Taylor, MI and see was a wee little girl about 60 grams. i gave her a week to acclimate, then tired feeding a f/t fuzzy. she didn't eat it, or anything for then next 3 weeks. i tried many tricks, but it just came down to trying live. i don't feed live because i don't have a reliable breeder for pinkies, fuzzies, and hoppers in the near area. so today after work i drove out to a mom and pop pet store about 30 mins away. it was a pretty nice little store, and i am sure i will be back often (check out the thread "petco story..." to know why).

well i picked up 2 large pinkies that were just about to become fuzzies. threw one in with my girl, who hasn't been handled or anything for 3 weeks. 20 mins later.... nothing. so i picked it up with my tongs, and it squeaked. which defiantly caught her attention, and BAM! she took it right off my tongs. i gave he 30 mins to do her thing, and when i went to check on her, she was looking for more, so i gave here the other one. BAM! took that one in seconds.

i was so happy because she was starting to really scare me. i weighed her a couple of days ago and she was 48 grams. if todays live feeding failed i have a vet appointment set for tomorrow, which i have to go cancel now. we were talking about syringe feeding her, but now that i got her eating i am hopping she can put on some weight, and look like the beautiful girl i know she is.

i just want to add one last thing... all the new owners out there, don't give up! it may take some time but once you get them eating it is worth all the hassle.

Congrats, I just had a big sigh of relief yesterday when my new 3 month old baby mojave ate. She is so skinny and little that I worried when she didnt eat her pinky. So what I did was , I emailed the breeder and he told me her first meal was a fuzzy. So I gave her atleast 4 more days after the pinky attempt, And i bought a fuzzie at first she didnt take the fuzzy but when I closed that lid of the tub and shutt the lights off, she attacked that lil guy so fast!! I was so thrilled I feel like you rigth now, ten thousand lbs lifted off my shoulders. I guess they've adapted to the first prey item the breeder has given them. Theres always a little baby Bp that will chose pinkys over fuzzies, or Bps that choose fuzzies over pinky. Now its time for my other baby to take a fuzzy tommorow. Goodluck with your Bp in the future!!

Are we talking pinky/fuzzy mice or rats? At 3 months old, I'd think she'd at least be on small adult mice. Most hatchlings take hopper mice as their first meal (the next stage past fuzzy).

Re: Update on my little girl

Hatchlings can start off on hoppers? Really? I've been feeding mine fuzzies.

He's probably around 2 months old but only weighs 55 grams. Apparently the place I got him from wasn't feeding him properly.

He eats fuzzies no problem. Should I try a small hopper? I'd like to get him eating the biggest pray he should be safely taking down to try and get him up to a better weight.

    Input is appreciated guys/gals.

Re: Update on my little girl

    Robin,
i might have typed 3 months somewhere but i got her a month ago and she was 3 weeks (with 2 feeding and 1 shed) when i bought her. she didn't eat the three times i fed her (after waiting a week to let her get settled in). i think i said she hasn't eaten in three weeks, but really i meant three feedings. yesterday was the first time she ate for me since i got her a month ago. hope that clears somethings up.

as for why i did pinkies (mice) was because thats all the live mice i could get my hands on yesterday. they were large pinkies just starting to get some hair. i started her off feeding with a f/t fuzzy, which she didn't eat. i will now move her up to fuzzys for a few feeding up till she looks bigger and will try a hopper. since she hasn't eating in a month i figured i would start off small with the pinky/fuzzy. i hope that makes sense. please let me know if i am doing anything wrong. this is my first snake that fasted that long for me.
    -Kevin
