I just started breeding and I keep my males with my females for like 2-3 weeks and he has gotten them all the past two times.

Re: rat breeding
Well sometimes you put a boy and girl together and you get babies...but othertimes nature gets in the way and it isn't always easy to determine why (this is the reason why I hadn't responded yet )
How old is the girl rat? Do you know how much she weighs?
Where did you get them?
What "type" is or what markings do both have?
All these questions lead to possible reasons why you haven't seen the rat get pregnant. Also, it takes about 32 days for a female rat to give birth and some don't "show" till the week before.

Re: rat breeding
Actually it takes 21-23 days between the rat getting pregnant and birthing, unless you are breeding the females back to back(pregnant while nursing, which isn't good...).

Re: rat breeding
I weighed them not to long ago i will do it again tonight. They were medium sized when i got them but they are all pretty big now. As far as the color one male is tan all over with black eyes, female is brown on head and part of back with pink eyes, the other male is i think a black hooded, i think thats what they are called, with an all white female with pink eyes. Im gonna snap some shots of them tonight. What do you think????????

Re: rat breeding
Female rats go into heat about every 5 days or so. I usually leave my females in with the male for at least 15 days or until I see them developing the distinctly pear shape of a preggo female rat. Some females that are really big bodied or are carrying small litters though will not really show pregnancy all that much. As soon as I figure they are carrying a litter I move each female into her own 10 gallon maternity tank so she can rest, eat lots and wait for her litter to arrive.
If you are seeing mating then the females aren't bred yet. Once they "catch" they develop a vaginal plug which prevents penetration by the male. The male gets the point and leaves his lady rat alone thereafter. If he's not smart enough to get the point, she'll usually give him a good smackdown and a nip to back him up off her.
