brighter future?
My job title is lead person for a welding shop. We haven't been able to keep a supervisor or material handler. My job has so many hats my head spins. I do lead, acting supervisor, dock hand, nurse, receptionist and whatever isn't direct labor, Sometimes even the direct labor. I love the work I do, but don't seem to get anywhere. Due to a slowdown all overtime has been cut and my wages were cut a few months ago due to a "new policy". I got part way to a business degree and quit because I saw no way to continue with lack of money. My girlfriends work pays for her schooling so she is going for business administration. While at the college she found out that I'm eligible for student loans and grants that I knew nothing about.
Looks like I will also be going full time next semester. I can't wait!! Even if it doesn't get me a promotion here, it will get me a better job somewhere. I love the people I work with, but due to losing overtime my pay is down 2 - 300 a week. I am ready

Re: brighter future?
Wow; I am in a similar situation. They slashed our bonus structure into a pathetic shadow of what it once was, and jacked up our percentage goals. I will be extremely lucky if I git 80 percent this month (I work in collections; not really a collector per se, but a payment-arranger.) I am trying so hard to pull my weight, and I know that Mark does not flaw me for making less money than he does, but I have been down in the dumps these past few months. Actually, the money I am losing is about what you mentioned; roughly 1k a month less, for working harder at worse accounts than before
When things are changed at work, sure, we have to adapt. Some changes are minimal and really not that earth-shattering; but there comes a time when you have to say, enough is enough. Just think; many (if not most) people never hit that realization that they could do better, and end up at menial jobs until their dying day.
I applaud you for taking the bull by the horns and planning on making a way our for yourself.

Over fifty can be a little shaky to be grabbing that"bull", but I'm always up for a challenge.

Re: brighter future?
Have you thought of starting a business? I know that it is not for everyone.. but it is how we are improving our lives here. Mark started a property-management biz that has morphed into a property renovation business; I am telling you, there is a lot of money in this. I wish that I myself were more mechanically and renovationally inclined; I would do more with it if I were. Our longterm goal though, is to buy the tattoo parlor that Mark works at on the weekends; he in a tattooing/supervisory role, and me in charge of all of the numbers, finances, etc; now that is our goal!
Do you know what you're going to study yet? I greatly admire ya for not giving up; heck, I know that at 25, a career change/learning new things was pretty major for myself. I went from cutting lunch meat to managing 800 collections accounts.

Re: brighter future?
I will be starting with business administration. I already have about 20 credits toward that. Then after that will probably go into engineering in some form. I have 31 years welding experience for custom and production type work. I've taken advance print reading and some drafting. It would give me an upper hand over a lot of them right out of college. If you work in manufacturing, floor experience is a big plus. The last several supervisors we've had on the floor I had to explain everything to them. Hopefully I don't drop dead of old age before I'm done.

That's a bit of a leap in job changes. I plan on staying in manufacturing because it's what I know.

Re: brighter future?
Welding is a strong field too. Sounds like you have the experience to back yourself up.
