A POSITIVE-ly Unexpected Surprise

Hello Everyone!

First off, I would like to congratulate everyone who has had babies already this season! I haven't had a chance to post on the forums at all these past few months but I do try to check out the threads regularly and have seen that there have been several awesome litters produced and clutches of eggs laid. So congratulations to you all so far this season!

We weren't expecting our first litter of boas until sometime around the end of this month - or so I thought! We have a couple of litters we are expecting this season that I am really excited about and looking forward to. And to be honest, our first expected litter for the season wasn't anything I was overly anticipating.

We acquired an adult female Type II Anery boa from another breeder back in the beginning of 2006. He got her from a friend of his so we really didn't have any information on her history. When we got her in, we ultrasounded her and she had very large follicles. At the time, the only male Nicaraguan Boa that we had was a male Type II Anery who was very small/young. Since we didn't have any other choices, we decided to give him a try.

He was probably just not mature yet because he showed absolutely no interest at all. No big deal. This year, we decided to pair this girl up with our male Het. T Positive Nicaraguan just to make some possible het. T Positive girls to raise up for future projects. This male was a very enthusiastic breeder and his efforts resulted in an ovulation.

Now I must have written the POS date down wrong because I wasn't expecting her to give birth until sometime around April 25th. So, you could imagine our surprise when we walked in this morning to find baby boas! Not only did we have baby boas a couple of weeks earlier than we expected, BUT...two of them were T Positives!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So our female Anery Type II Nicaraguan boa is also 100% Het. T Positive...and we were fortunate enough to unwittingly pair her up with our male Het. T+! The final count on the litter was 10 live, healthy babies, 9 slugs and 2 stillborns. Unfortunately, one of the stillborns was also a T Positive. Of the babies, we ended up with 2 male T Positive Nicaraguan Boas and 3 male and 5 female normals 100% Het. Anery Type II and 50% possible het. T Positive - not bad at all!

I'm not sure if anyone else has produced T Positive Nicaraguan Boas that are 100% Het. Anery Type II but I am very excited about the potential of this project! Hopefully, in a few years we will be able to produce a T Positive Anery Type II Nic - in other words, a T Positive Nicaraguan version of the Snow Boa!

What a great way to start off the season! Hopefully our coming litters can rival this one!

Oops! Thanks for the correction! I meant to put 66% het. but just wasn't thinking...that's what happens on not enought sleep (and too much tennis!) LOL!

Either way congrats! It could be so much excitement as well! I am waiting for school to let out and I will be taking the journey over the Causeway to come visit the shop. I need the grand tour!

Question...


Would one of your possible het nic girls be compatible (even tho' it would be such a cross) w/my Colombian male?

Mine is DH ghost hypo pastel, poss. het T+ and I'm starting for the search for an eventual mate for him. But unlike The Donald, would need something more economically affordable.

Are the genetics close enough btwn the Nic and the Colombian in order to prove my male?

Tmlowe5704 - definitely stop by whenever you have a chance! I would be happy to show you around. The retail area of our facility is fairly small but I can take you around to the different rooms that generally aren't open to the public. We also recently changed our store hours during the week. We're now only open from 3pm to 7pm on weekdays (except Mondays - we're closed on Mondays) but we're still open all day on the weekends. Be sure to introduce yourself when you stop by!

Sweety314 - there is actually a lot of confusion with the Type II Anery Nic gene. Some other breeders have hypothesized that there are a couple of different strains of Type II Anery ("black tailed" Anerys vs. light colored Type II Anerys) and that the strains are not compatible.

Some people think that the Colombian Anery is compatible with the Nicaraguan Type II Anerys and I believe a breeding was done that proved this although I do not know the details of that.

I don't believe the Nicaraguan T Positives are compatible with the Colombian T Positives but I don't think anyone has done that breeding to either prove or disprove that theory.

Nicaraguan Boas and Colombian Boas can breed with each other with no problems, but whether or not the genetics would be compatible is another thing. My suggestion to you would be to stick with the Colombian morphs since that is what you currently have just to be on the safe side. That way, you can do a breeding a KNOW that the genes are compatible.
