    Insurance ?

I have a question for those (hordes) of you who know more than me on the subject of insurance.

I was recently told by an insurance agent that if I were to have a hobby that generated income that was based at my home, i.e. web-design, photography, gardening, or herpetoculture (quizzed specifically on these 4), I could not get a homeowner's policy! When quizzed further, I was told that if I had an income-generating hobby (not a listed business) based at a separate property listed semi-commercially with a different insurance company, I still would not be able to get a homeowner's policy on a new property with the company I was talking to.

Thankfully a third company had no qualms with income-generating hobbies based at home, so I'm no longer in a bind... but is the above scenario typical? I think it is pretty extreme, bordering on discrimination.

    Re: Insurance ?

i never heard of it happening before, but from what you say,it seems that if there is money being braught into the home from a business or an income generating hobby, it woulod be classed by them as a business premises so they cant offer a home owners policy on the same property as it would probly cause confusion in the event of a claim, if the cause of fire or what ever accident was caused by an item used by the business of by the home itself.maybe im wrong but from what i see this is why.

    Re: Insurance ?

    yes.

since I had to call a whole slew of companies to get homeowners insurance, (I've got insurance w/3 diff companies), I found out that for the one it wasn't the biz, it was snakes specifically! I tried to get ins. to cover my baby who could be worth quite a bit if he proves out.

For this company ANY exotic pet/animal would exclude you from ANY coverage....they won't do it at all. the others didn't see the snakes as a biz/hobby but wouldn't insure b/c of the increased fire risk/danger.

I finally had to go to a TOTALLY different company, and have a farming/ranch policy, b/c of the acreage and the fact that I have horses. This way I have the extra liability coverage against injuries and damage, and eventually any farm equipment would be covered. With THIS company, I didn't even mention or ASK about the snakes.
