where to put my Herpstat Pro Sensors
Ok since I'm new and wanna do this right and yes I searched old posts, but I'm wondering where I need to put, tape or whatever my sensors in my 20 gallon breeder tank. I taped off the top/lid to hold in heat and humdity and poked a tiny hole in the screen so I can lower the sensor probes in, but I just don't wanna leave them dangeling there. I have a fixture with a 100 watt bulb and a undertank heater right below the light fixture taped underneath the tank with cypress substrate, not too deep....Now...where should I tape or put my sensors to assure my BP won't move them and that my temps stay accurate.....thank...MJ

Re: where to put my Herpstat Pro Sensors
What we did with ours is we use ReptiCarpet underneath shaved aspen and have a little hole just inside the edge of the carpet where the probe comes down from the ceiling (well, we did when we used a 20L) so the probe stay put coming down, and then another where just the probe itself sticks up above the carpet. This keeps it anchored directly under the hide...so one probe under the cool side hide and one under the warm side hide, with UTHs underneath each.
We use a third in the same manner for under the water bowl with another UTH, set 100F, so that water evaporates and creates humidity. We change the water often and clean the bowl often to prevent cooties growing.
The last probe is threaded behind ExoTerra foam decor backing, with a hole halfway up the cage for the probe to stick out. This regulates our CHE and the ambient air temp.
If that sounds confusing, lemme know and I'll try to take some pictures later.

I would recommend placing and securing the probe directly on the heat source
Here is why, even if you do secure the probe in the enclosure your snake can tip is water bowl over which would lead to the probe cooling down and make the temperature shoot up, same thing when your snake urinate if it is close to the probe it will cool it down too.

Here is a link to another thread that is a poll on where people put their sensors. It will give you a lot of opinions as there is no one right way. But the most commom is either directly on the heat source (I do it this way) or in the cage (tub) above the heat source.

Let us know if this doesn't help.

Two things...for my UTC should I place the sensor under my substrate and kind in the middle of the UTC..and how can I place, tape or whatever my sensor for my heat lamp on or near the heating element?
