    Snake has aspen in mouth

So I switched my snakes substrate from newspaper to aspen for aesthetic reasons. Well today is my first attempt at feeding on this new substrate. So Kane comes out with a strong feeding instinct. Attacks the rat and begins to swallow but gets some of the aspen chips stuck in his mouth and immediately drops the rat and begins getting all freaked out. Should I be worried?

Nevermind he seemed to have swallowed and is now poking around the rat more carefully. He should be good

It's not because they can't digest a small bit of wood, what do you think happens to all the hair and bones from the rodents they eat?

Usually when someone is new, they take time to learn before giving out advice.

To the OP - a little stray aspen is fine. As someone already said - a little aspen won't hurt your snake, their digestive systems are designed to digest fur, bones, and teeth. After all there's no one in the wild laying down newspaper and papertowels for them to prevent them from ingesting dirt and leaves.

I have at least once snake each week take down a piece of aspen with their rat. It will just break down with the food item in a few days and just pass on. Nothing to worry about.

Re: Snake has aspen in mouth

The problem wasn't them digesting the aspen. I knew that they were capable of doing that. What was worrying me was that it seemed as if my snake was having difficulties breathing and/or hurting it's mouth. The snake was really freaking out about the aspen in its mouth.
