Petco mice nasty or bad batch?

I bought some frozen mice from petco which I usually don't do but the private petstore was out. Well I took one out this morning and stuck it in the fridge for tonight. I just checked it and it smells rotten, not the normal dead mouse smell, I mean ROTTEN. I wouldn't feed it to my snake if it was the last rodent on earth. Its now in the garbage outside. Has anyone had this problem with petcos frozen mice or rats, or did just grab a rotten one?
I am going to go to the private store tomorrow and get a live mouse and pre kill it, I don't want my snake eating something like that mouse. It was bad. I have a very strong stomach and I almost threw up.

They usually get Mice on Ice, right? My friend gets those at her store, and they are usually good; I would let the store know that you want a refund or at the least, a new package; not sure if you should have kept the old mouse if it was that gross, but I hope you saved your receipt!

No I didn't save the receipt, well I thought I did but I think I may have thrown it away. Its not a big deal, I just won't buy any there anymore, I think I may just have to contruct a Co2 chamber and buy some mice and freeze them at home. That way I know they aren't sitting out for any amount of time before they get frozen, or for shipping.

Re: Petco mice nasty or bad batch?

I've only gotten mice from petco twice and I wasn't really happy with them.

The rats I get from American Rodent Supply, Classic Dum's, or Rodentpro are frozen hard. The mice I had from petco were somewhat soft and thawed between the aprox 5 minute drive home.

It's possible the one you grabbed may have been on top and experienced more thawing or something, who knows. It may be just be the temperature they keep the freezer at.

I could run and get mice from the local petland and the rodents were frozen hard....but some were freezer burnt

Their large mice are like 17 g each. I used them when I first got my BP just so I could have them handy if I ever could not go get mice. I used two and it was real squishy both times no matter how I thawed them.

I have gotten rock hard mice from Petco before, but they NEVER have the right size mouse/rat if they have any at all.

Re: Petco mice nasty or bad batch?

I've had that problem, I went to petco once for frozen mice and all the mice I defrosted were rotten. Imo they just don't buy anything good and that is a normal thing, because I bought mouse pinkies and small rats there and all of them were disgusting. Also their crickets usually die within the first night if the other critters don't eat them.
