general BP questions

ok I have recently discovered I am having major back surgery in about a week and a half. My SO has been real supportive in my snakey babies, but he doesnt care for the feeding part. the squealing of the rats seems to bother him.

so anyway, he said he would go buy the rats "if I absolutely have to" I also have a friend who wouldnt mind hitting the pet store for me, so i think I have that covered.

I have 2 girls, 12 and 8, and they are both bigtime involved with the care of my babies, and I am wondering what you all would think about me teaching them how to feed and clean up after my babies? well. they help me do the maintenence all the time, but they have never fed them before. I guess my big question here is, if you were in my position, would you feel like teaching them how to do a feed, or would you see if another adult could do it for you?

I'm gonna be out of commission for at LEAST 2 weeks, probably closer to 4 weeks. and I know that they can go a whille without feeding, but I dont want to do that.

my opinion for what its worth is get an adult to do it your kids are too young to have the responsibility to do it unsupervised, better to have it supervised by someone that knows the snakes and their behaviour in my opinion.

If your out for 2 weeks I would not worry too much, wont do them any harm at all waiting that long.

If your feeding "live" then its more important to have some one of experience doing it and not someone that wont be able to deal with a situation that can potentially go bad.

Personally if you cant get someone with snake experience to feed them but can get someone to change the water and clean up if required I would go with the latter and feed them when you get out.

yeah I was kinda thinking that too, but wasnt too sure about making them wait for a few weeks to feed. you're probably right, cause no one but me has ever fed them before, and my SO doesnt want to.

your husband needs to step up and help out!, imo. sometimes when i'm real busy with work, my wife helps out and feeds the snakes.

I agree with Vaughn! When my son was hit by a car a couple of years back, almost killed, while I was at Childrens Hosp. with my son during his long recovery, my hubby pitched in and helped. Like it or not, it was part of the deal and part of not being selfish realizing that I could not be there to do it myself. Heck, when I went to Arizona last year for 2 weeks, once again, my hubby pitched in and took care of the animals.

I do also agree, it is best to either let the snakes wait for a feeding till you are able to do so yourself or find another competant adult who has experience with this stuff that you can count on if thats what you need to do..but IMO it is really not fair to expect/make the kids have to do it... thats alot for kids that young to handle.

I have to agree.... and while my 13 & 4 yr old girls help out at feeding time... its always well supervised... I wouldn't let them feed by themselves...

I'm 13 and I've had BP's since I was 7, but my dad hasn't let me feed them unsuporvised until about a month ago when he was out of town, and we both agreed just to wait till he got back, so I still havn't done it.

I agree with everyone else. I would just wait till you got back to feed them.
