Weird Issue with probe when snake is in hide.

I have an accurite thermometer with the probe on my warm side. The probe is in my snakes hide laying on the substrate. It reads 92.5, i watch my snake enter the hide with the probe and i see the temp fall to 86.5. Any thoughts? Is this the body temp of the snake? I'm confused

it is probably the snakes surface temp it is reading, try putting it just under the substrate a lil and see if it stays.

its generally a better idea to have your sensor in a place that can't be moved or varied. Many of us attach directly to the heat source so the read out is more accurate to the actual heat output of the device.

My snakes tend to not burrow below their substrates near the glass. So wouldn't I in turn not be giving them the proper temperatures at substrate level?

it doesnt matter. its your snakes surface temp. if you need to know the temperature at that given time take the probe out and move it elsewhere in the warm area.

Having the accurite reading vary a bit is no big deal. It's not suprising that a temp snake coming from the cooler side of the tank will be cooler. They're ectothermic, so totally normal. The temps will even out a bit after the snake starts to absorb the heat from the warm side. The bigger concern is that the heat source probe is not effected, and more stable in it's measurements.

I had this happen every now and then. I have the probe laying on the substrate under his hides. Every once in a while, when he enters, he will either lift it off of the substrate which results in lower temp readings or drive it deeper into the substrate which results in higher temps. I have used aluminum tape now and taped it to the inside of the hide so that it is touching the substrate. So far he hasn't moved it!!
