    Probes are not right

I decided to do a simple test this evening to see how accurate my thermometer and thermostat is. I taped both probes inside one tub, side by side, right on top of the flexwatt.

My acurite is reading 89.4, and the thermostat is reading around 93. There's about a 4 degree difference, even tho they're basically in the exact same location...

I dunno which one to believe is the more accurate one

Talk to Vaughn ... unless the thermometer is extremely high end (ie. a couple of hundred dollars) there is typically a +/- 3 degree variance in it's accuracy. Sounds about right for the test you ran.

They're leveling out now. i opened the tub and found that the acurite thermometer probe wasn't stuck to the bottom of the tub...problemo solved. Thanks Adam

    Re: Probes are not right

i usually see a 1-2 deg. difference in thermostat probe readings and accurites. close enough for our use. this is with helix and herpstat probes. the rancos and johnsons are usually 2-3 deg. difference, still plenty good enough for our purposes! in thermometers to accurately measure better than 2 deg. +/-, most of them cost 150 bucks and up. not really needed unless you are ocd about temps/incubation.

helix and herpstat both having working accuracy to .9 tenths of one degree. i would spend my money on good stats and cheap thermometers(accurites) but i also already have good thermometers for work.

Yeah that's pretty much what I did...Herpstat ND and acurite. Is it safe to say that the Herpstat is probably more accurate?

yes, rated to .9 tenths of one deg. the accurites are 2-3 deg.+/- good enough for general checks and 10 bucks!
