    Antibiotics?

Can anyone tell me where I can buy some antibiotics. I dont want to use the vet that I have been using. Its the only one in the area that takes reptiles at all, and I think I knew as much as the vet did about snakes, and thats not very much.

    Re: Antibiotics?

Many vets will prepare a properly dosed amount of baytril to treat RI if you are a customer of theirs and you call them with the weight of the snake.

Baytril can be administered orally, which is best as it can cause skin tissue damage if used via a needle.

Enroflaxin does just about nothing when used orally on ball pythons ... ball pythons have very poor absorption rates for oral anti-biotics and the only way to effectively administer them is by injection ... Bayer (the company that manufactures Baytril) has done specific testing with Baytril on ball pythons with respiratory infections and concluded that IM injections are by far the most effective method of treatment.

As to the OP's question ... bacterial infections can't just be treated with any old anti-biotic off the shelf ... some strains of bacteria are resistant to some anti-biotics ... gram pos infections don't respond to gram neg anti-biotics ... etc ... there is a lot more to it than just loading up a needle with some meds and firing away ... unless you have a ton of experience treating infections in ball pythons, the most responsible thing to do is to have your snakes infection cultured and then tested to determine the most effective anti-biotic for treating that infection ... you'll need a vet.

    Re: Antibiotics?

Thanks for the info Adam. The vet I took new snake(no name yet) said to use ceftazidime, but where can I find it. I am very upset with the vet I took her to, and will not go back. They want 55.00 dollars per office visit plus medication. This is after 153.00 dollars to tell me what I knew already (has a R.I and needs antibiotics. I am looking for another vet but not many in my area.

    Re: Antibiotics?

If you live in the US, the only legal way to obtain ceftazidime (aka Fortaz) is with a prescription. It is an FDA controlled anti-biotic.

Those prices sound about right for a standard reptilian profile at a vets office ... unfortunately, rescuing sick animals isn't cheap.

Those prices are high for my area other vets about 75 miles away have told me it would be about half of that. How often is ceftazidime used for reptiles? The vet will not mail me the perscription, I have to come in to get it.
