Re: The pet we could never own
I know some people do use owls in falconry, so technically, you could own one. They are not considered great falconry birds, so they're not terribly popular, but still. I believe some falconers fly eagle owls.. I know great horned owls are one of the more common in falconry.

Something odd happened today while flipping through a classified ad bulletin from where my mom works...somebody local had Bennett wallaby joeys for sale!
Mentioned that how cool it would be to have one yesterday, and I find the ad today! I would love one, but at $1500-2000 that's a bit too much for me at the moment....and I have no idea how to care for a wallaby.

Does anyone know if its legal to keep a crow? The one critter that I've wanted for years, that would be somewhat practical to keep is a crow, a raven would be better, but I'm pretty sure they're protected.

Erin, crows and ravens are migratory birds and therefore protected by federal law. Unless one has a federal permit (these are difficult to obtain), it is a criminal offense, to keep a crow or raven. These laws are sometimes silly in application, (e.g. a game warden treating a kid raising an orphaned crow as a criminal), but in principle, they have a rational basis -- to keep people from buying or selling native birds in pet shops, as was once a common practice. Also this protects birds from idle, would-be pet keepers whose intentions are good, but are so lacking in expertise that they end up abusing the animals.
And as for me, I don't think I could narrow it down to just a few animals I couldn't really have... I think I want an Ark so I can have 2 of everything!! How's that for a sweet zoo?!

You Might Be a Herper if...
You're standing in the pet store checkout line with your purchase in hand & the person behind you says "Oh, they're so cute! Do they make good pets?" and you reply, "These? Hmmm. Actually, I have no idea...I never thought about that..."
