Anyone ever heard of "studding" snakes out?

I know this sound stupid, but i'm being serious. With the value of morphs, I was curious to know if this has been done. I mean, they do it with dogs, cats, rabbits, and various farm animals, why not snakes??? And how much would the stud fee be?

I think in the case of ball pythons they just call them breeding loans.

Re: Anyone ever heard of "studding" snakes out?

I'm sure someone like Adam would have a lot more insider knowledge about that, but I've heard of it being done quite a bit. I'm not sure what the stud fees would be, but I've heard it being typically half the clutch after hatching. And yeah, like Bill said, I've only heard it called "breeding loans" rather than studding like with other animals...same thing, though, I guess.

Yep, they are called Breeding Loans, they are great as long as you absolutely, 100% can trust the person. Jasballs and I have a few loans this year with some of his females over here and some of my females over at his place. It also helps that we only live about 20 minutes from each other.

What is usually fair? Half the clutch + first pick for the one with the most valuable snake?

Re: Anyone ever heard of "studding" snakes out?

Have heard of it being done in exchange for half or part of the clutch. Same way I do for litters of pups. It depends on value of clutch. If splitting a clutch it is only fair taking turns picking from live stock produced. The agreement is usually based on what each of you want or need from the breeding.

I second the bit about a contract. Too many people forget what their original agreement was. Not worth the hard feelings a misunderstanding can cause.

Re: Anyone ever heard of "studding" snakes out?

That is friggin' awesome news!!!!!! Problem is, I don't really know anyone close enough to me that has BP's as well and is interested in breeding!!! So, hypothetically speaking, a random breeder who has nice morphs could breed one of their males to one of my females, and the resulting clutch would be het for whatever, and all I have to do is give half or more of the clutch to that breeder???? WOW!!!! It's a win-win situation, and involves no spending of money!!!! Heck, I'd be happy with just one baby that is het for pied, hypo, whatever nonetheless half a clutch!!!!
