you have many different choices. i use fish tanks as i like the look of them. others use rubbermaid containers and others use more lab type of enclosures.

just remember ventilation is important... so is "can they chew out?" - and the babies can fit thru bars so cages aren't a good choice.

I use some tanks with good tight lids and the metal clamps to be sure they can't get out. My feeders are in rubbermaids, I cut the top out and put wire tops on. If you have a lot of males crowded in, yes they can/will fight. For my breeders, currantly the females each have their own spacious facility. I will be keeping two of the female babies out of the currant batch so I can keep all three in the huge tank they are in now. I will only toss in males to breed. Or toss the females in with the males.

Looks like you used some ingenious methods to McGyver something together there!

I am kind of envious you get to keep them outside lol! I imagine it stays fairly warm year round.

What's the large green bin sticking out of the top of that one cage - a food hopper?

Just a thought about number of rats/mice as far as the size of their tubs. Just be careful to not overcrowd them too much. Even though they are destined to be fed off it's still only right to give them all reasonable room to move around as well as good ventilation especially when using pine bedding.

You may want to consider keeping one mother per enclosure when they have babies as rats can steal babies back and forth and end up hurting the young rats or get stressed enough to cannabalize their own young.
