The beginning of my hypo project :)
This is the start of my hypo project. She is a het butterscotch hypo. Next year, I will either get a hypo male or het hypo male to go with her...that just depends on how this first year of marriage and grad school goes I can't wait to get out of this apartment so I have room to get a few more ball pythons.
8 Ball Pythons is AWESOME!! Adam gave me a great group of females to choose from (which made it a very hard decision). I could not be more pleased with the one we chose.
Well thats enough talk.....Here she is:

Oh wow, she's a cutie pie. I love that coloring. I have a question for you though. I've only been a bp owner for about a month and a half now and I know nothing about the breeding aspect of it. Of course I would like to learn all I can for future reference. What does het mean? What does hypo mean? How would you know if a bp is either of those things? Is that something a vet can tell you?

Re: The beginning of my hypo project :)
het - short for heterozygous...meaning that the snake carries a gene for a particular feature
hypo - short for Hypomelanistic. Hypomelanistic ball pythons have a lower production of melanin. This causes the snake to appear like it is always in shed or a faded look. Hypomelanism is a simply recessive gene.
The only way to know that an ball python is 'het' for a particular gene is by knowing the genetics of the mother and father. Other than that....they look like any normal ball python. A hypo is visually different than a normal bp and also sheds clearly (i.e. no pattern on shed)

Absolutely beautiful girl Daniel! She'll give you pretty babies one day I bet.
I know how you feel about picking from a group where they are all winners. Adam is AWESOME and his snakes are top quality! We still go back to the email with the pics of the snakes and drool a wee bit over another male in the group. We spent ages going back and forth between that male and Finn but like you we are very happy with our choice. Oh how I wish I was able to get both tho LOL. Oh well there's always tax time!
Coyotemoon, all I'd add to the information about hets is this...since you can't visually tell if a snake is a het as it will appear just like any normal looking ball python, you want to be careful that you buy hets from a reputable breeder who truely knows his snake's genetics and is honest in representing that to you.

She's very nice Daniel, Hypo's are one of my favorite Morph's... I was lucky enough to hatch out 3 hypo's this year from my first Het x Het breeding!
