Well I finally got an agreement for a snake! I had done a lot of work around the house and my mom said could get a new tv because the other two don't play movies correctly. Convinced her otherwise and asked for a snake. I don't watch that much T.V. and since this summer was free for me I am watching a movie every night. But I thought a snake would be much cooler than a TV. Anyway when I get back from vacation I am going to get set up. Although I am still torn between a california kingsnake and a bp. I have one major? concern. The cage. I may build it if i can, but I don't know if I can keep getting larger tanks so I would have to start out with the larger. Some people say they have had success while others say no way work your way up. I'm thinking my budget is saying the first option or is there no significant difference. And would a 30 gallon be good for either type of snake in its adult size. I do want to get a juvinile of ethier species. And I do feel better knowing I did the work. Thanx

Ps. My petco sells snake both actually and the keep the Cali in a little critter box. And the bps are outside the critter box. Just wondering if they keep the snakes in like this if I should get one there. I would prefer a breeder though but petco is very convient.

Pss. I guess i had more than one concern. Well Time for my movie! lol.

Snake wins over tv.. good thing!

Don't bother building a cage when you can buy a 20 gallon tank for around $20, or a 30g for around $30. An adult cali king needs a 20g, BP a 30g.

A baby of either species should be started in nothing bigger than a 10g (costs around $10)

I wouldn't keep a cali king in a critter cage.. I hope they heat it at least. Petco generally doesn't get a great reptutation for their herp care, but it depends on the store. You'd be safer getting the cali king from there, but better is a breeder.. and check out kingsnake.com classifieds.. you'll find some good deals! Cali kings for $20-30 + shipping.

It's wonderful you are considering a snake rather than vegging in front of the TV (can you talk to my teenage son LOL).

You might also consider using an appropriate sized Sterlite or Rubbermaid sweater bin for a young snake and then move it up to something bigger later on. Your local Wal-Mart type store has a big selection of these and they are very reasonably priced (usually under $10.00). There's tons of threads on here on how to set up a bin like that as well as how to make hides cheaply (pet store hides are way over priced!) and where to buy equipment so you don't get taken to the cleaners by your local pet store.

I just got this idear of getting a cage diveder after looking at some ways to breed fish. Could this work? And then as the snake grows the diveder moves over, until it is full grown, and the diveder is no longer nessesary. Thank you for your replies.
