Thought for the Day
Just sitting here enjoying the first sun this week in northern Michigan, sipping a coffee and as always enjoying the threads here and this thought came to me.
How very wonderful it is this community of snake folks, from the newest of new like Mike and I who haven't even got our first BP yet, to the most experienced of you. All sharing information, hopes for the future, disappointments, worries, joys....I do find it truely amazing and actually surprising at some level.
To make an anology. I've owned pure bred dogs in my past. I found some of the breeders, in fact most of them to be nowhere near this open with their trade "secrets". In fact, more of "get this purebred spayed or neutered or I won't sell it to you". Almost as if worried I would somehow compete with them one day. Much more protective of their turf, so to say and very almost snobby about certain blood lines.
So me being me it set me to thinking about the different dynamics. Any thoughts on this? Why does this hobby/business of snake breeding seem to "breed" such openness and sharing? Such an obvious joy at a snake hatching that a simple normal ball python born in someone's back bedroom and worth maybe $100.00 is greeted with as many congratulations as one of NERD's most stunning babies?
Well whatever the reasons are, it just got me thinking....one of my many HMMMMMM moments.
Have a lovely spring day all.

Re: Thought for the Day
I completely agree with you about the people here. They are absolutely wonderful and always there to help out. I love it. I find it kinda funny though. If you tell non-snake loving people you own a snake you get this weird kind of look. Like there's something wrong with you and how many satanic cults do you belong to. This community is very open and friendly. I've only owned my first snake for about 5 months and am so glad I found this site.

Re: Thought for the Day
It's not universal in reptile breeding as a hobby or business for people to be open, discussing their projects, willing to answer newcomers' questions, etc. There are a number of great, really personable breeders of reptiles, and sometimes you'll see posts from some of them here, but there are some other sites where there has been a great deal of animosity, competitiveness, pettiness, name-calling, accusations of poor animal care or bad business practices, etc. Sometimes it does get ugly.
Fortunately for us, this site has overwhelmingly been populated by helpful, curious, informative, stimulating, and similar personality types instead of the uglier personalities, and your staff is dedicated to keeping it that way.

Re: Thought for the Day
i like this forum alot! mainly because everyone is polite and not alot of bs. most of hear are passionate and willing to listen/share info. not all forums are like this and this is why i post here alot. i do view those other forums kind of like a soap opera, not too serious. reptiles in general is a minority compared to cats, dogs, birds, horses all of us need to stick together and further the hobby. by being open and honest we can advance the hobby by better quality animals and better husbandry. the more people attracted to reptiles the better off we are as a group. not all breeders share info openly, some you have to spend thousands with some will do it for free.
this was a good thought for the day!

Yes.. this is about the cleanest (troll wise and troublemaker wise) forum I've ever participated in. We don't tolerate the troublemakers.

Re: Thought for the Day
I have to chime in. This forum is definately the most animosity-free forum I go to on a regular basis. The moderators here know how to deal with pettiness and trouble really quickly, ebfore it has a chance to escalate into full blown war.
I am glad that there are so many people on here, both new and old users, who can come together and share our love without competitive BS or snobbery. On other forums, your normals are treated as "just" normals many times when you simply post a pic of them. This tees me off really fast and definately discourages normal-owners from using those forums. This place is definately not that type of place!
