Determining prey size

No worries. Thank you for your suggestion. I think the combination makes a lot of sense and I will confirm with a scale. It is very deceiving at least for me to see how small they are (the other one is even smaller) yet to learn how much they can/should eat. I would do what is right for them to make them happy. If they can find a way to tell me that they would prefer to live in Africa, you'd better believe that I'll take them there immediately.

I picked Layne Lab because according to their website, they euthanize their feeder animals and their animals have been proven to have no salmonella. I have no proof. However, they're in California so the shipping would be reasonable. Also, I've read good reviews of them on this website. I'll take a look at Perfect Prey as well. Thanks.

As far as prey size if you can't weigh things out just go with something 1-1.5x the widest part of the snake's body. Don't worry about the head or neck size. They can unhinge those jaws and amaze you with the things they can eat. Especially some of the python species.
I also prefer Perfect Prey or Big Cheese for feeders only because Layne Labs shipping is substantially higher to my part of the country.

If you're looking for a provider, I usually go with Perfect Prey or Big Cheese as well, they both have a good rep and very consistant sizes (usually). I also sometimes buy mine straight from suppliers at expos, though these are usually hit or miss when it comes to sizes.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I got my scale and was very excited to weigh my babies. They turned out to be <= 75 grams. Cute! Can't wait for them to grow. I got them a couple of small mice and they took them down like nothing. So I'm set to order from one of the three vendors. I'll price them first but I'll definitely order a small bag of small mice, a small bag of rat fuzzies and a small bag of rat pups as suggested. Thanks.

Just one thing to clarify: you've got multiple new snakes? Are they housed seperately?

Yes. I got two babies (adopted really) with very different personalities (one moves like a turtle always clinging onto my hands and the other one is always on the go). They are housed separately in two 24 x 12. No mites. Great feeders. Docile. They socialize with me pretty well - the slow one climbs onto my hands pretty much every time I offer my hands. The other is shy but never aggressive. Have to say that she has gotten much better (i.e., trusting) in as little as 3 weeks so I'm very hopeful. All in all, I am very happy with the pair. I got lucky I guess since I didn't even get to pick the snakes I'm ordering them an AP T10 with a divider (one T10 for now and another T10 later so each can have her own) with pro heat panels controlled by Herpstat4 possibly adding ultratherm heat pads. I think that should be a sweet setup for them. Right? Thanks for asking

Sounds good to me.

IMO get the heat pads. Probably overkill. However, I like redundancy and belly heat.

Just my opinion, but I’d rather have cheap insurance especially if you live in a climate that can get cold.

Glad the little BP’s are friendly and eating. That’s a good combo.
