    My latest project

When I went through my divorce years ago and moved out of base housing, I rented an apartment at my aunt & uncle’s house. The guy who originally owned the house used to brag how cheaply he did everything. My apartment had been the garage when the house was originally built.

The bathroom has needed to be done for quite a while. I’ve been putting it off because 1) I work 3 jobs; 2) I didn’t feel like spending the money; and 3) I was afraid of what I would find once I ripped everything out.

My father is a retired union carpenter, so beginning on Monday, he will be helping me (or I’ll be helping him ). But I started the demolition yesterday after I got Maverick settled.

To be honest, a grenade would have been easier (and more fun). While ripping out the Sheetrock, there was a loose 2x4 that was just laying up there and fell and hit me. Good thing it hit me in the head so there was no chance of it damaging anything.

Then while breaking up the cast iron tub to remove it, I realized there was no floor under the tub. I had to hold it up with my left hand, swing the sledge hammer with the other hand and keep it from falling on the copper supply lines and pvc drain lines and damaging them. NOT FUN!!!

Oh my, good luck with that! I love projects like that, but sometimes they can turn into nightmares

Im a plumbing contractor, cheap landlords cause so much damage with their “cheap building” corner cutting. Thats hilarious about the lack of floor under the tub! Good thing nobody got hurt. Every year there are billions of dollars in property damage caused by inferior building repairs/remodels un permitted, not done to code, not safe!
Save a penny, lose a dollar.

    Nice sledgehammer work!

Yeah man. None of the light switches or outlet boxes were secured to studs, I don’t think any of that Sheetrock was green board. And the floating tub really had me irritated. At least I know it will get done right, with my father’s help. But there’s a little more work to be done than I had originally hoped. I have contingency $$ set aside for that, but still.

I was hoping if I found any surprises while doing the demo it would be something like Al Capone’s vault, the Hope Diamond or some other lost treasure...but my luck be darned.

From start to finish, here are some pics of the project. I still have a couple odds and ends to pick up at the store but it’s pretty much ready to move my stuff in and start using it.
