Trying to escape

I cought Kitty repeatedly trying to escape through the grateing covering the holes atthe top of his cage the other day. The square holes are jsut big enough for him to stick his nose through, but not anything else. He wouldn't stop trying to get out. There are no sharp or rough edges, but should I be worried? He kept trying to push hard though the holes. I am afriad he is goung to hurt himself or may have already.

What's the top/grating made out of? Is it coated? Pliable?

It is chrome coated rouded edge grating, not pliable. It is a little shallow crome, square kitchen basket. I tried to find pictures, but as yet to no availe. I feel I should add that Kitty, though very active and searching, would refused a meal a few minutes later. I left him there for hours and he didn't eat at all. Tomorrow will be week 4 wihout food.

Wouldn't get too wound up about the 4 weeks off fedd. I would, however keep an eye out on the grating to be sure the efforts arent strenuous enough to end up with a more full-facial version of nose rub, or worse manage to get his head wedged in there.

It would take a really long time to get any kind of abrasions from the grating. It is very smooth. You don't think the lack of eating the other night and the escape attempt is related?

ok first, i'd go buy some wiremesh, like the kind they sell at pet stores, i know petco sells wiremesh with clamps, just coat the inside top with wiremesh
so that this wont happen.

Hmm, I don't know why I didn't think of that in the first place. I looked everywhere for something to cover thoe holes with and what I have is all I came up with that wouldn't be damaging as far as sharpness. One of the reasons I didn't use the screen stuff before is I don't know how I would attach the mesh to the plastic though, any suggestions?

Get plastic craft mesh instead, and attach with cable ties (available at most dollar stores as well as hardware and general merchandise stores). The plastic craft mesh will definitely not result in nose-rub scars, where the wire mesh may, depending on type and quality.
