Temperature Gauge - Required?
I bought a digital temperature / humidity gauge w/ a probe. If I have a temp gun and a herpstat working my UTH do I still need that thermometer if I have my temps dialed in? If so, do I need a thermometer for both the hot side and the cool side? Do most people bury the probe in the substrate and keep the thermometer inside the enclosure or outside.
Here's the one I purchased.

It's best to have a probed thermometer at each end but I just set the temps , check them a few times for a few days then I simply do random checks with my temp gun when I'm spot cleaning and changing water .

Re: Temperature Gauge - Required?
Am you are required is to know your temps, that does not mean that you have to have a thermometer in your enclosure, having a temp gun and taking daily reading is all that is required.
I have been doing this for 11 years and I never had a thermometer in any of my enclosure, I do however take readings twice a day.

I use a temp/humidity probe in all my cages even with my Herpstats. You still to know what the ambient temps are and the Herpstat isn't going to tell you that and a temp gun isn't a reliable way to check air temp.

Does your temp/humidity probe also read ambient temps or just temps where the probe is touching. Wasn't sure if you could purchase an all in one thermometer.

Probed thermometers read the temp where the probe is touching ( vital ) and the stand alone / stick on ones read the ambient sir temps

It will read where the probe is touching unless you hang it. A wired temp unit will read changes faster than a diode one but honestly, it really shouldnt make a difference as you shouldnt have a lot of change. With all that said, i just use Acurite ones that are not wired and just put them on the shelf in the cages. Half the time they get knocked down by the snakes lol. But it still gives me an idea of how the humidity and temp is.
This is the ones I use. They are pretty durable too as my retic has pushed his off his shelf twice into the water bowl and it still works after being set out to air dry awhile lol.
