    Crawling Backwards

I looked it up online and found this:
    https://www.quora.com/Why-cant-snakes-crawl-backwards

And I'm looking at Cookie quite oddly because he is indeed crawling backwards. I'm not sure why....? But he's looking forward and crawling back.

Maybe I should have named this kid Michael Jackson....

    Re: Crawling Backwards

Mine do it every now and then if they see something they don't like and don't want to be noticed. And my short tail does it all the time. It seems she likes to scoot more than serpentine where she wants to go. And she goes backwards as much as forward.
I'm not sure where they got that fish won't go backwards. I watch them do it all the time while fishing. It's just not an efficient movement so they only move backward to get clear of space and danger to turn around and go forward. Birds are the same way. They can and do fly backwards, but it's not efficient. It's mostly done by birds that are more capable of hovering like hummingbirds and finches. But i don't think I've ever seen an animal that can't go backwards, you just don't see it often for the same reasons we don't like to move backwards. We can't see where we are going and are muscles aren't trained for that direction of motion.

My snakes will all crawl backwards at least a little here and there. My little hognose does fairly often. I have two fish tanks full of fish that almost all swim backwards at times. My goofball ferrets go backwards all the time, but especially when they back into their corner to pee/poop.
