Uth on Sterlite Plastic tub

I kind of rushed into my decision to get a ball python because I got a really good deal on a Lesser Ball python and my current set up is a Tub with a Zoo Med UTH. I just wanna know your thoughts on it. I have about 40 bucks to spend on on a thermostat of rheostat. But idk what to get. I just want to get my temps down because I know their probably over 90 degrees.

Turn the UTH off if it's not currently being regulated. It's probably at 120°. You should have a thermometer or temp gun to measure the temp in the tub. You can order a Jumpstart thermostat from Amazon. Will run you about $30.

I have a temp gun and check the tub often. I have an extra few layers of substrate on the heating pad side and it stays around 85-100. Is the Jumpstart one good?

They will burrow under the substrate, so you need to be taking the temp below the substrate, not above. Also, 85-100 is a very wide range... You should be turning off your UTH before your thermostat arrives.

If you must provide some heat, you can place your UTH lightly on top of your tub just to provide a bit of ambient heat for now.

You get what you pay for. I had a Jumpstart like tstat once I used in a pinch and it failed in the on position with little use. Others have had good luck with them though. Because of my experience I will never use or recommend them again. I run Herpstat.

Use the search feature and learn all you can about your new responsibility. They are not exactly hard to keep but if you do it wrong if can be a huge pain and expense. Exotic vets aren't cheap.

Unplug before the worst happens, get a dimmer and save for a good thermostat.
