Re: Emergency Set Up
Precisely. I've not had a long power outage in this house since I bought it five years ago. I got complacent. Bit me in the butt when something finally did happen.

We had a power outage here in Chicago at my work yesterday afternoon. The wind was so bad I physically could not walk forward. Yeah... its bad!!
I hope the power comes back on soon dude. I'm lucky that here in the city they fix the power in a matter of hours because so many customers are affected. They are on top of it.

You don't need a whole house generator if you just have a few snakes. You need a way to keep one room at a safe temperature for them, while keeping the rest of the house warm enough that your water pipes don't freeze. A portable 4-5kW generator can power a space heater in the snake room plus your refrigerator/freezer (keep the rats frozen!) and a few lights. You can use non-electric heat sources such as a kerosene heater or wood stove for the rest of the house.

Re: Emergency Set Up
I only have the one snake. The whole house generator idea is just as much for me as it is him. I'm 53 and have severe arthritis in my feet, ankles, and knees. These past few days have been very difficult for me. Not to put too fine a point on it, I'm one hurtin' puppy right now. Given that, it might be worth the investment.
In other news, the power is back on! Skull and I are back home!
Lots of lessons learned out of this. The main one is that I need to have back up equipment in place so that if I ever have to bug out with Skull again, I can do so without having to do so much jury rigging. I'm going over to the herp shop tomorrow to see what I can put together.

An unregulated UTH can melt/burn plastic. A UTH on a thermostat set so the heat pad doesn't go over 95*F will be fine.
