You may have missed the major clouding in his eyes since they like to hide when they're in blue, as you've experienced. Also, I've never found any consistency in how clouded my adult male's eyes become. All sounds fine regarding the impending shed.
Not so sure about the humidity spike, it's pretty amazing what can affect the humidity levels inside the vivarium, but leaving a dry towel on the top shouldn't do anything. That is, unless, you have a wooden vivarium with vents at the back, and it covered a vent somewhere at the back? Although you say it was folded up. Hrm..

Re: The time has come ...
Update for anyone still bored enough to follow this, woke up this morning to find clyde looking a bit bright he had knocked some of his leaves on the floor and underneath to my surprise is his skin lol unfortunately he didn't do a whole all in one but more a three piece suit. Better than the last shed so I am somewhat pleased, now to sift through and make sure his eye and tail caps are amongst this, today is his normal day of offering food so will see tonight if he's hungry now he's freed himself, thanks for all your help guys will keep you posted on next shed
