    Thermometer in the incubator ?

    So..let's pick your brain.

Exactly how do you measure the temps in your eggbox / incubator ??

I got my hotbox incubator today. It comes with a thermostat and the probe is supposed to hang halfway down inside the incubator.

So, where exactly do you all position your thermometer ? And what kind ??

I was planning on using a thermometer with a probe. And placing the probe inside of the egg box.

Do you use a thermometer inside of the incubator ? Do you use a probe ? If so, is the probe inside of the eggbox or just simply inside of the incubator ?

    Thanks

Mine is a glass door freezer. I have a thermometer on every shelf so I can make sure there are not any hotter areas.

I have a see through door as well, but I think I have read somewhere (god knows where) that one should measure the temp "inside" of the egg box via probe ?

I mean, it would make sense that the temp inside the egg box would be the same then right around it, on the shelf. But I wasn't sure.

    First timer here

    Thanks for all help !!

Re: Thermometer in the incubator ?

I have a thermometer probe in the middle tub which is a dummy tub (setup like a tub with no eggs) where I also have my T-stat prob. The display is outside the incubator.

I have incubated the same way for 7 years so I know the temp diferencial is one degree on the top shelf and 1 degree on the bottom shelf (there is 8 levels)

That is also a GREAT idea !!

My incubator is rather small, it fits up to 6 egg boxes (2 shelves and bottom) so I'm not sure I need a dummy tub. Most likely I will only use the middle of the incubator. I have 3 snakes breeding, but not sure all will take. Its my (and theirs) first try.

I guess I will test run the incubator and test temps on all levels, and also run a "test" tub ahead of time, with substrate and everything but the eggs. Try out a few levels and temps and see what happens.

So which thermometer do you all use ? I know Accurite is a favorite. Any model numbers ?

The dummy tub allows me to have something I know is stable while controlling everything else as temps will rise during incubation, and I prefer to have my T-stat probe in a rub.

As far as thermometer I use an acurite, and get a reading once every other week or so with a temp gun (from a tub with eggs) as I get clutches in or out.
