How much handling is too much?

So my little guy is between a year and a year and a half old. Ive had him for 4 months. I got him being almost completely unhandled (AMAZING eater though). But he went from being suuuuper bitey and defensive to (seemingly) enjoying being out a lot.
I started him doing 5 minutes a day a couple times a week until he calmed down.. but now ill have him out every day besides after feeding for a day. But i think he likes it? Ill open his tank and he will come right up my arm and will just chill with me for a few hours sometimes. He always seems relaxed, and doesnt want to let go of me when I got to put him back. He eats every week aggressively... so is like 3 or 4 hours out some days okay? (In his tank his humidity is perfect, but out it isnt)

3 or 4 hours seems like a lot to me. That would be too much for me. Let alone the snake. lol My gf likes to handle them more than me.

Re: How much handling is too much?

    I'd agree , seems a long time tbh .

Presumably the temps aren't too bad in the guys room ..

In my case I have a very varied collection which usually get round 5 to 15 minutes max this is when I have time though , but a daily thing by any means - my Royals and the Dwarf Burm plus SD Retic are all super relaxed and in occasion will stay out longer if I'm watching telly

my royals get about 5 min tops when I"m cleaning if that, I know they rather be left alone, the boa though get's a little more roaming around time. Boa's are more curious creatures and ill sometimes just pick him up just to handle him.

I only usually take mine out 1-2x a week for 5-10 minutes and have a dedicated reptile room so they stay well within normal temps.

Depends on my snakes but Rosey, Caesar and Luna are the ones who like to come out the most and will usually be out on me for anywhere from an hour to two. And I try and get everyone out for at least a few mins 3-4 times a week except Allie who only gets 1-2 times a week as she isn't that fond of being handled.

3-4 I guess is fine assuming the snake doesn't get agitated or stuff although that does seem a little long for me. I usually only get to the 2 hour mark if I'm watching a movie and then usually only Caesar or Luna are up for that much time sitting in 1 spot. Rosey by then has gotten bored and usually crawls under a pillow or the blanket which is more or less the sign to me she wants back into her house lol.

Re: How much handling is too much?

Well I think (like you see replied) it depends on the snake. My Burm ( 17 years old) comes out as soon as you open the enclosure. He likes my speakers and wraps around to feel the vibtations. He will come right up your leg, around your neck and back down the other side hahaha.... He is th most Docile snake Ive ever had and acually likes to chill with people. When he is out I turn the heat up to 82...
My Balls are not like that at all.. Just a different animal. I did have a Ball back in 1990 (wild caught) that was always asking to come out.. (day/night) when you waked into the room. It was possibly because he was used to being free, and when I took him out he was like Dora the explorer, never hissed or acted timid either... I chalked it up to him being a busybody but I haven't had one like that since.

Re: How much handling is too much?

Oh yes, the temperature stays completely fine when he's out.
And he isnt always out that long, but some days its all he wants is to be on me and getting him back in his terrarium can be difficult

If they stop eating, i would say they've been handled for too long and need to be "reset". I.e. No handling for a few days what so ever.

Re: How much handling is too much?

My guy, generally day or night will.often come out when im in the room and get active, ill open up, he'll just latch on ant hang with me placidly for hours and never wants to be put back. It can be a 10 minute process of getting him off of me. He can sure cling. If i have him out for a while i will put on my humidifier as well.
I mean, he seems completely calm the entire time. He loves to explore a little too. He went from feisty to way tame (and very friendly) fast.
