Honestly, there's no excuse for this, I think. You can easily go and get a cheap plastic tub from somewhere to house the other one in. They're competing for that spot, and yes it can lead to death. Separate them.

Ive done just as you instructed. I was told by people that I know with MUCH more experience than me that keeping them together would be fine, and that I was worrying way too much. It pisses me off that I didn't go with my gut on this one.

Re: Mating?
You have done the right thing by separating the two snakes. Don't be so hard on yourself either, we all make mistakes and then we learn from them. Chalk it up to a lesson well learned.

There is so much misinformation out there that it can be hard to figure out who is right. Pat yourself on the back on this one - you went with what you were told and kept them together, but was aware enough to seriously question it. Now you know, you are obviously intelligent enough to learn from it, and won't be doing the same thing again. Kudos to you for being open to suggestions. Both snakes get to live because of you.

You shouldn't worry about mating, now that you've separated them the chances that they mated succesfully are really small.
