hogg island vs. columbian red tail
ok, i thought i had my mind made up on the snake that i was going to get but the wife says she thinks we should get a hogg island boa instead of a columbian red tail. the only reason she says this is because me and her went to a expo a couple weeks ago and we seen both the hogg and red tail at two different breeder stations and i asked alot of questions to both breeders (keep in mind that one breeder had the hogg and no red tail and the other had the red tail and no hogg) but i ask the same simple question to both breeders and the question was... what is the temperment difference between the hogg and the red tail and likewise the one with the hogg said in her opinion the hogg is more laid back and the one with the red tail said that the red tail is more laid back.... the only reason my wife says go for the hogg is because (in her own words) "well the breeder with the hogg seemed like she knew what she was talking about" now can anyone here (that hopefully has/had one of each) tell me what your honest opinion is.
Thank you

Don't base the snake on a breeder. Find the snake you like and base it off the snake. With that said, I don't own any Hog Island(its HOG not HOGG) boas but they are a BCI just like a Colombian boa is a BCI. Now, when you say "red tail", and "Colombian", i'm going to assume you mean a Colombia BCI, not a true red tail BCC. And with all that said, both of my BCI girls, my sunglow and my normal Colombian are both puppies. My Colombian who I've had the longest, I can do anything to her. I can grab her head, pet her on the head, flop her on my shoulders, do whatever and she is fine with it. My sunglow is pretty much the same but she is smaller so I cant really sling her over my shoulder and stuff lol. It really boils down to the personality of the animal and how its raised. I interact with all my snakes a lot as babies and they are used to me by the time they get older.
Basically you just need to ask the normal questions when you buy a boa. how big are the parents, what is it eating, how often is it eating, what is the temperament and if you are buying in person, hold the animal and see how it acts. Most will be shy and some will be nippy but most I've seen were pretty mellow even as babies. My Colombian has bitten me once in about 4 years and that was when she was a baby and new and I came in over her head and she got scared and bit my arm but she was too small to get her mouth around it lol. But since then, like I said, she is a puppy. She is the only snake I will just reach right in no matter what and pet her head or grab her at any time.
Bottom line is find the boa with the look you like and then go from there. The only ones I've heard of having an angry streak in general are CA boas but again, each one is different. It's like GTPs where biaks are the nasty little sobs in general but some people I've talked to have ones they can easily pick up and carry around with no pissiness at all.

No problem. Yeah a lot of babies can be skittish. To them you are a giant Godzilla monster who might eat them. They usually out grow it though. You just don't want to start with a biter even though they tend to out grow that but you never know lol. Like my JCP was a biter when I got her and me feeling like the snake whisperer at the time, took her in. I got her transferred from eating only live mice during the night to eating F/T any time and I've kind of got her to the point where I usually don't get bit but it is a lot of work. She is the only snake I got like that. The rest are lazy lol. Even my retic is a lounger for the most part unless he smells food. Then you better be ready to use the cage door as a shield lol. I really think the previous owner did something to the JCP to make her so nervous but she is slowly mellowing out with lots of food and relaxing lol. Any ways good luck with your choice.

Great posts, Sauzo! (As usual)
I just want to echo the significance of the individual animal. Though my own experience is far more limited, I do have a man-eating Central American, lol. He is a sweet little lazy-bones, not head shy or cage aggressive or anything. But i "ordered" him sight unseen from the breeder (picked him up in person) and while talking about selection with her, she assured me that he was the most tractible of all the available snakes. She specifically told me about other litter mates if his that were nervous and/or nippy, but he was different. All of that is just to reiterate that, at least when comparing apples to apples, or bci to bci, each snake is different.
That being said, between Colombians and Hogs, the Hogs are smaller, though they seem to be some of the largest of the "dwarf" locales (so many variables). Many also admire the unique coloring of Hogs, lots of pinks and oranges, but that's totally subjective. Anyway, I'm sure you'll be happy with either, don't forget to update with pics once you find the right one!

Re: hogg island vs. columbian red tail
thank you sauzo and dkatz.. i will be getting the bci for sure (as soon as the cage arrives from animal plastics). And im sure ill get another snake again later on and i will probably get the hog because as dkatz said the colors are beautiful. i think the reason i like the bci is because of how big they get and the pattern of the snake itself and to me they look "mean" i guess you could say they have more of a respectible look about them hopefully he is not literally mean tho lol. but once again thank you and i will post lots of pics as soon as he arrives and settles in.

Re: hogg island vs. columbian red tail
I have a Hog Island and he is pretty laid back. his favourite thing is to hang out on the backs of my dining room chairs (at about 4 1/2 feet, it takes two chairs for him to "hang" comfortably). He eats well and has never attempted to bite, just hissed at me a few times when I first got him but I handle all of my snakes a lot so they get used to it. And, yes, one snake can soon turn into many. I started with a ball my son brought home, then found the Hog and, basically, rescued him from a local pet store. Then along came a Jungle Carpet on Kijiji that I had to snap up. And I got my Brazilian Rainbow from a guy working on my cottage (they are a super snake with beautiful markings and the iridescence is spectacular). I have found, for me, that four is the best number to have because I'm always working with one or the other - cleaning, handling, feeding, etc.

Anoying semantic point: both are BCI (boa constrictor imperator), they as just further identified by locale each of which has its own set of unique features but not enough to consider them different subspecies. Some locals do, however, have their own subspecies like Suriname and Guyana which are both BCC (boa constrictor constrictor) or Argentina's BCO (boa constrictor occidentalis). And just to make it even more fun, it is now preffered to drop the "constrictor", so it's just st BI or BC (but hopefully not BO). Incidentally, almost all morph animals you see; albino, motley, hypo , etc will be BI.
I highly reccomend reading The Complete Boa Constrictor by Vincent Russo, its like a boa bible. Great info on care and husbandry and encyclopedic listing of all locales and subspecies.

Re: hogg island vs. columbian red tail
I just bought my first boa, a female hypo hog island, a few weeks ago at the Tinley NARBC. She is an absolute puppy, which is one of the reasons I bought her. Also what drew me to her were the colors typical of hogs that Sauzo mentioned, she has those gorgeous oranges and pinks and the hypo makes it even brighter.
My advice is to strictly buy in person if you can help it that way you can get a feel for the snakes individual temperament, and see what their colors look like in person (my girls colors do not show well in my pictures). I had hundreds of snakes to look at, weeded it down to a few, then saw this girl and that was that. Much more fun experience than picking one out online, and you can be more sure of your decision I think. I made myself wait months until Tinley, it was tough but worth it.
Be ready for your boa to be your favorite over the balls. They are much more fun to handle!
