Lasik
Has anybody here had LASIK done?
I've been wearing contacts for 10+ years and was debating on getting LASIK done. I went in for my consultation but kind of got into it with the manager who I felt was only trying to rush the procedure disregarding my concerns or the doctors advice.

I had Lasik done in 2006 and as of my most recent check-up about 6 months ago I still have 20/20. One of the best things I ever had done. Due to sensitive eyes, I couldn't wear contacts and was tired of buying glasses (I was hard on my glasses with the activities I do.)
If you don't like the way the facility conducts themselves, I would go find another place that makes you comfortable. Lasik is considered "cosmetic" so it wouldn't surprise me to find places only concerned about geting your money and not very friendly.

My sister did about 25 years ago, I did not. Due to a genetic fluke, as we're approaching 50 she now needs reading glasses and my eyes have improved to the point where I don't need glasses at all.

Yea I was trying to go through LASIK vision institute but the manager really ticked me off. I'm likely going to go through Singer/Haley vision place now as they're supposedly some of the best in the country.
My whole ordeal was I wasn't spending over $2k to have it done. I have free vision insurance, get 6-8 boxes of contacts free, along with a free yearly eye exam so I'm not out any money at all. I can justify paying $2k to not bother with contacts but the original price they quoted me was $3,784. After I said my friend who had a worse prescription than me paid $2k at this place in July, she was all like oh we had a promotion running blah blah. She then "called" corporate office and they'd honor the $2k price for me(This was on 10/20), but she said I had to schedule and have it done before the end of the month. She wanted to get me in on 10/26, but what she was trying to do was contradictory to what the doctor said she wanted to have me do. I said I could schedule for 11/2 as I had stuff I had to do and training that I didn't want to do after just having LASIK done but she was so adamant that they couldn't honor the same price for a week later. I'm actually going to call their corporate office and file a formal complaint on the way I was treated as a potential patient.

Ive heard from plenty of people that after around 10/15 years, they start to need glasses once again. As silly as it sounds, check groupon. A couple of friends got some really good deals for LASIK from groupon. Just be sure to research the clinic before you buy as with anything but they got the entire procedure done for $1500.

Yea, I'll have to do that. The company I wanted to go through was The LASIK Vision Institute which have a lifetime guarantee as long as you do your annual checkups. If you start needing glasses again, they'll perform the surgery for free.

While I've never had the need for laser vision correction, and therefore have never had it done myself, I do work at a laser center.

Re: Lasik
If they won't honor the price for when you need to schedule, then just tell them you'll go elsewhere (just like the age old bluff with cable companies). But yeah call corporate and complain. A "box" lasik place like them with many facilities nationwide should give you the discount regardless. Check with your insurance, while not covered most vision plans will have some type of discount provisions for lasik if you go to a place they are signed up with.
FYI to all those who are talking about necessity for glasses later on, it is true that sometime the eyes will still get worse again over time. I'm on the 10 year mark now and have 20/20 with no deterioration (although I could get a small script if I wanted better than 20/20). Reading glasses are another thing. Lasik fixes the curvature of your eye, it does not fix the muscle weakness which occurs with age which is the main reason why a lot of people with or without the surgery need reading glasses as they get older.

My brother had lasik and never had a problem. I unfortunately do not qualify because my astigmatism is too high.
