    Re: why quarrantine?

Do vendors at reptile shows like NARBC not fear this? i handled a lot of snakes from many breeders last weekend, a few requested i put some hand sanitizer on. So do these breeders put all of their leftover show inventory into quarrantine after the show?
Any responsable vendor does quarrantine after any show because if you dont you are asking for trouble

I had no idea they could pass airborne diseases, is there anything that they can have that could make a human sick?
I have never heard of a virus that moved from snakes to man. But who knows what can happen. This is one good reason to make sure you wash your hands after handleing

If i quatrantine into another room of the house or should i just keep them in the same room? Ive got central air...
Anything you can do to limit contact helps do not hold a quarrantined animal then go handle one that isnt.
Wash your hands, and any tongs, bowls, scales exc. before using them again.
Just to add this is also why you should not go to a show then go home and hold your snake. I come home from a show my clothes go in the wassher and i take a shower

Laziness is nothing more than the habit of resting before you get tired.

    Re: why quarrantine?

QT is important to stop the spread of diseases and parasites. To do it all you need is to have the new reptile's setup somewhere different than your current reptiles and not cross contaminate. It's tested and works.

Personally I'd treat the new enclosure for potential mite infestations, wash new reptiles, quickly dispose of whatever they came in, and keep husbandry solid.

I also freeze bedding and food stuffs when they come in because they are often the way things get into your collection. My basement is covered in diatamaceous earth and I have to regularly clean my rats, and their bedding has DE mixed in, because I introduced a new male, and all of my rats have mites now. I didn't used to freeze food when I got it and have been struggling with flour mites in my bug room, because they got in and are now everywhere my other bug enclosures are, and I can't use DE in there because it will kill the other bugs, some of which are valuable colonies I'd hate to have to establish again.

While all of the issues I've had between not QT and not knowing to freeze foods have been minor (DE handles mites and has little negative effect on rodents in studies, flour mites just make things smell sour and might reduce weights in animals), I would absolutely hate to deal with something like snake mites.

I can understand that it might be a pain to do but if every animal you had died or even just one how would you feel at that point. I try to do my best but as a renter with roommates i dont have a lot of room to do quarantine. I got lucky with two walkin closets so one is a rodent room, one is quarantine, and the main room has the rack in the corner. Its the best that i can do but that is why i am very particular about who i buy snakes from and not letting people near my snakes the same day they were playing with someone elses.

There are a LOT of irresponsible vendors at expos, which is why it's important to do your homework before shopping. You would be amazed at the number who have snakes on the table on Saturday that were shipped from a wholesaler the prior week. They haven't owned those snakes long enough to even have to feed them, never mind long enough to determine if they are sick.

I had a vendor tell me that the "dumeril's boas just hatched out two weeks ago and had two meals". Insert rolling eyes emoji here.

Point: boas don't hatch from eggs

So really, who knows where the snakes even come from?
