Anyone else get crazy excuses from apartments?
I get some crazy excuses when apartments say snakes aren't allowed. I find it almost comical when people come up with ridiculous situations to not allow snakes when they say they allow all pets. I'm in process of getting a new place and I mention I have caged animals, and when they ask I say reptiles, then I say snakes if they ask again. I've gotten all kinds of excuses such as "oh we don't allow them because the rats you feed will escape and start a colony" (I should mention I have 4 snakes feeding on f/t and that this was right after they said geckos {roaches??} were okay and I mentioned all my food was frozen) to "oh they may escape and go into the plumbing and cause plumbing issues for the entire apartment" (also after they said geckos were okay). Anyone else have some crazy excuses from landlords?

I was thinking about getting a house but I don't have the finances yet. Still gotta pay off student loans and housing loans on top of that plus down payment would not be fun. Maybe when I have a little more in savings but for right now that's not very feasible

I don't believe they can refuse snakes if the city allows them as pets. It's discrimination. At least here in Canada it is. Apartments aren't allowed to refuse pets. They can say no, but I can still bring them.

I am no expert in pet laws but I believe in the us discretion is given to the place or hoa that you buy/rent from with the exception of service animals. It is normally enforced with a lease and specific pet rules on the lease per apartment. Maybe I'll have to look into it more. Or I can pay for the English test and start my immigration to Canada

I asked my apartment if they allowed snakes, and the lady immediately goes, oh, eeewww, no! What if they get loose?
So I asked her, what about other caged pets like hamsters?
Oh, those are fine. My husband and I shared a huge eyeroll.
So disallow reptiles because they're 'gross' if they get out, but allow rodents that will chew everything they find in the walls. Flawless logic.

Have you thought of telling them, they are my comfort animals. If they allow pets and you offer a pet deposit, it shouldn't make a difference what animal it is. I think we need more public education.

Na because I think that is a legitimate thing that people need and I don't want too impose some type of bias against that. I also tried the pet deposit and one was willing to do that but counted each snake individually which with even just 4 snakes (and a cat) is an insane amount for me. The next one did but they had a pet maximum and, again, counted each snake separately. I definitely agree on education though. And parents that don't pass on fears to children and media not portraying snakes as scary antagonists
