Re-freezing Mice????
I really need some help. I've searched all over and I can't find a definitive answer to my problem.
On Monday I ordered 50 frozen mice to be delivered on Tuesday. But after a series of unfortunate events the mice only got dispatched on Tuesday afternoon about 6pm. for delivery on Wednesday.... Now due to more unforeseen events involving bad weather and the delivery truck being involved in a crash the mice will now be here between 5.30pm and 6.30pm today, Thursday.. Which is in about 6 hours from the time of posting this.
The store have said the mice are packed in insulation and have been packed with ice packs but I doubt it would have survived the 48 hours its been in the back of a truck. Now then is it safe to re-freeze them? Most of the info I can find relates to people not re-freezing them after they have been in a warm viv overnight. But these mice have been in a cold place in cold weather.
Any advice would be very much appreciated...

Re: Re-freezing Mice????
Where did you order your feeders from? Usually they pack them with a decent amount of dry ice. Most of my orders take 48 hours to arrive and one even took 72 hours because FedEx goofed up. Hopefully they're still frozen solid when you get them. If they're completely thawed I probably wouldn't use them.

Re: Re-freezing Mice????
I ordered from Hungryreptile.com
Hmmm. I guess I will just wait and see what kind of state they are in when they arrive. Thanks for the reply.

Re: Re-freezing Mice????
I order my Rodents from Big Cheese Rodents and they have backed more than enough dry ice. I've even had my deliver arrive 2 days later due to a long holiday with no issues.

Re: Re-freezing Mice????
Even if they're thawed, if they're still refrigerator temp you can re-freeze them. Be sure to separate them before freezing if you don't want a big block o' mice . But I bet they'll still be frozen solid. In colder temps the dry ice takes a long time to dissipate.

If they arrive frozen then all OK, but if they are thawed then I would suggest getting rid of them, or try to persuade seller to resend again on their cost, but dispose the ones you got.
Refreezing is not a great idea, not worth killing an animal with them

I'd be surprised if it wasn't frozen after only 48 hours, all of my shipments from Big Cheese have arrived frozen after 72 hours, they usually take 3 days to arrive. Ship Monday, they get there Thursday, ship Tuesday and they get there Friday.
I used to refreeze twice, but after losing one of my rainbows boas, I either don't refreeze at all or refreeze only once and only furred rodents. We never figured out what exactly caused it, but it's mostly likely her last mouse caused the blood infection that killed her in some way. You can't always tell when a feeder is bad, either, it may smell perfectly fine and still end up killing your snake.
As long as the prey doesn't sit at room temp, refreezing once shouldn't be much of a problem. If they're above 40-50F (read with a temp gun), then I'd throw them out and get more.
