    Sphagnum Moss info. Humidity problems

Hey all. I have a question about sphagnum moss.
I really struggle with humidity in my viv. I've tried everything. Even with misting I can only keep 40% through the day and have even dropped alot lower at night.
The only thing I hadn't tried is sphagnum Moss so i bought some and put it in my viv a couple days ago. It's worked really well and gets me up past 50 most of the day.
Only thing is I would have to have it in my vic constantly and have read very conflicting opinions on this
Anyone had experience with sphagnum moss in a viv on a daily basis ? Or no anything about it ?
All input would be greatly appreciated thank you.

The moss works great! When I had a glass tank, I'd usually put it into their hide so I didn't have to keep up the humidity in the whole tank.

Now that I have a PVC enclosure my humidity is on point most of the time. I still put it in their hides when they're shedding.

Quite a few people have said about the fact that it's to damp to keep in all the time because of scale rot and things like that. That was my only concern really.
My bp won't be long before she goes into her first shed with me see and I really need to get that humidity up when she does

Scale rot isn't only caused by high humidity. It's caused by high humidity and unsanitary condition in the terrarium that causes bacterial growth. As long as you keep the terrarium clean, you'll be ok.

    Hey,

I was having a hard time too as we have a screen top cage (upgrading once she's a bit bigger). We bought the moss and put it into a spare hide that she doesn't use and just kept wetting it. Only during her shed time. For the rest of the time I find that keeping damp towels over 3/4 of the screen and misting keeps it pretty up there in the 50s. I can't see why you couldn't keep it in the cage full time in an unused hide or log.

I have an exo terra viv so i have a screen top aswell and I really can't wait to upgrade when she's ready !!
I mist several times a day, have a water bowl under the heat lamp and have used a damp towel over the top but didn't seem to do much to help me so I put tin foil over half of it In stead which did a little but again not much. I changed from aspen to bark chips which really helped but still no were near where I need it.
I thought maybe the hygrometer was broken so i currently have 3 digital ones and they all read pritty much the same so i know it's not that.
I think I keep a nice and clean viv so shouldn't be a problem then.

She's my first bp and I'm trying to do everything I can to make sure she stays healthy and happy

I forgot to mention we switched to Zoo Med's Eco Earth Expandable Compressed Coconut Fibre. This helped ALOT. You add water and it's very cheap considering you don't need much...half a brick is more than enough. When it looks too wet I just 'mulch' it around with a stick. I am in the same boat as you. Valentine is my first pet and I just want her to be happy and healthy because I love her so much.

I have been thinking about trying a different substrate again but don't want to change to much to sudden and stress her out.
I will be giving the viv a full strip and clean on thursday so i might think about changing for a different substrate then.

When I used an exo terra with screen top I aluminum taped one of those car windshield sun screens across top and had 80% humidity until adding some air holes to it.
Seems to work much better than just aluminum foil, I never misted and used aspen

Because I use a ceramic heat lamp and have a light unit I can't do much to cover the top. Just foil over a quarter next to the ceramic and foil over a quarter under the light unit (it's a double but I only use one bulb so i can keep the other side covered). I was thinking of gettin a sheet of glass to go under the light unit so should let the light in and hopefully keep the humidity and heat in aswell
