Lice products to kill mites?
Thank god I don't have mites, but was talking to a breeder at a local
expo and he said the best thing he uses is some lice treatment stuff you can get at Walmart. Anyone ever hear of this? I can't remember the name of it but he said you can spray it right on snakes. On their heads and everything and it doesn't bother them and will kill all mites. Just trying to educate myself a little
more.

I believe he may have been referring to a product called Nix. I would never use it on a reptile. If this breeder has mites often enough to have his own little remedy, you might want to give that some thought...

Re: Lice products to kill mites?
Didn't buy from him, just talked with him due to what appeared to be an influx in mites at the local show. He actually said he uses it on all animals he brings back that don't sell at the shows. Said a lot of other breeders at the show are starting to use it also and that since he started doing this years ago has never brought mites into his collection from a show. I don't know if that is what it is called or not, honestly doesn't sound familiar.

Re: Lice products to kill mites?
I don't know that I'd apply it directly to a reptile but people do use it to control mites.
I used it on the substrate and tub of some ASF's of mine that picked up mites. It was not used directly on the animals and was allowed to fully dry before they were placed back in the tub. It worked great, killed the mites quickly, and caused the ASF's no visible problem - even with a litter of week old pups. If i remember correctly, it has the same active ingredient as the reptile spray you can buy.

I believe the product you're referring to is permethrin. It's the active ingredient in Nix and Provent-a-mite. From what I understand it's not to be applied to snakes but works well on treating their enclosures.

There was a post here somewhere about how to safe and effectively use RID and NIX. There were different mix ratios of different products. Some to be used as PAM, and some could be applied to your animals. I can't remember it all off the top of my head though.

That said, NIX/RID is the "best" method since it's the most idiot-proof. There are other, much less expensive, easily-obtained forms of concentrated permethrin that will work just fine if diluted correctly - but on the flip side, keepers who think "if a little is good a lot is better" end up poisoning their snakes as well as killing the mites, which is why they're rarely recommended.
