What are some good options Boa options for a novice ones that are tamer and don't get as big?
Look up Vincent Russo's site, and read about some of the localties.
Rosy Boas are very acceptable as a novice boa. We had one when I was younger. And they tend to be very docile. Sent from my SM-T900 using Tapatalk

Read this book. http://www.amazon.com/dp/0978897927/...sl_12qfyt0i2_e "Boa options" Are you including all boas, or the Boa Constrictor species? If you are asking about boa constrictors read the book in the link I posted.
