    New baby soon...kenyan sand boa?

It's a baby and we may be picking it up tomorrow. We can't decide between a 10 or a tub...I know the setup will be basic because they burrow anyway, so I figured tub, but she likes the tank. I hear a hide is unnecessary, is that true? I wanted cork flat..
Also, can they feed on rat pinks? Or are those too big?
I'm super excited. Already have heating and substrate ready to go

Kenyans are small when they're born. Depending on age/growth, you're probably looking at something more along the lines of a mouse pinky/fuzzy. Doubt she much cares what is used to hold the substrate so I'd go with what's convenient. Don't forget to share pictures!

Problem! He won't eat unless in his cage, with sand as substrate. I figure if he lived in the wild there'd be no issue, so there's not too much to worry over, correct?

All my snakes take in substrate, sometimes quite a bit. It sure doesn't seem to bother them at all. I wouldn't think it would be any different for a Sand Boa considering that they can digest a rodent and what is inside it.

BTW- congrats on your new acquisition, I think Sand Boas are cool. I've been thinking about possibly getting one at some point.

I have used different substrates (not actual sand) my latest is sani-chips (chipped sanitized aspen used in lab cages).. and I like it the best, I also used walnut hull bedding in the past (similar in texture to sand). In any case, I have fed in the tank with different substrates and had no issues. I know some breeders use sand-blasting sand and feed in tubs, so you shouldn't have any problems.

You can give him/her something to hide under and you may even see some climbing. Back when I had mine in 10gl tanks, I had one female in particular that would try to climb the probe cord on her thermometer every night.

I use aspen for my sand boas as well, I feed frozen thawed and sand does stick to the food quite a bit, I haven't ever had any problems with impaction with sand boas but I'm one of the few people that I know who actually HAS had baby snakes die from ingesting sand (corn snakes) so I tend to shy away from it. Besides, sand is heavy and hard to clean.
