I was just as surprised by the crocus as you are! Apparently there are fall blooming varieties. I have know idea what the cultivar is, the previous owner must have planted them so there isn't anyone I can ask.

Hmm interesting. I'm a plant specialist for Lowe's and I don't recall ever seeing any fall varieties in my area. But your climate is a lot cooler than mine on average I think.

The kinds you get saffron from are fall blooming! These aren't those though. My friend thinks these look like wild types (Colchicum autumnale) but if that's the case then someone went out and found them then deliberately planted them, because they're in the formal flowerbed next to the house. Whatever they are, they bring such a nice pop of color to the garden when everything else is winding down for winter. I'm going to have to find more!
