Substrate duriing breeding?

I was watching one of Justin Kobylka's you tube videos about substrate. He said he uses newspaper because during breeding the substrate can get into both the female and males vents and cause infection. How true or common is this? Of course he is a well known breeder and probably knows what he is talking about but it is also the first time I have heard about this happening.

I do the same for the same reasons. I actually had a piece of substrate getting in the male's vent which led to an abscess. Now all animals being paired are on newspaper.

This is nothing new I remember discussing this with Justin years back 2007 or 2008 I believe.

We breed on aspen and never had an issue. You could put them on newspaper if you wanted no biggie.

Since I have not bred any of my animals as of yet I've looked at what a lot of breeders have used, and seeing that a good number of breeders I look up to like Justin, Ralph, and even Brian, use paper I figured it would most likely be the safest way to go as I don't want to potentially risk the health of my animals. Being in the restaurant industry, I can get butcher's paper fairly cheap and its essentially unprinted newspaper
