Re: Keeping a rat and snakes in the same room?

I just went about things as usual. My room had 10 ball two boas and a corn never got taged or had any problems. I just made sure not to handle the rats and then the snakes the rats use to be were the hatching rack is for right in the corner. As you can see I don't have a big snake room it's just a utility closet

The rat breeder that I go to keeps his all together.

He also breeds Retics, Burms, and Balls. He had about 50 snakes in a confined hallwayish area right next to the rats and mice.

I will add, that every time I have gone there, the place did not reek of rodents. He keeps the place clean.
The one thing I found that you can count on about Balls is that they are consistent about their inconsistentcy.

JaYdEd, do you have any advice on doing so? I'm worried I'm gonna get bit while trying to clean or just handle my snakes because of the rats scent.

There's really no trick to it. I just keep my rat rack clean to keep the smell down. And wash my hands before handling my snakes. I have 8 ball pythons in the same room as my rats for about 7 months now and haven't been bit yet.

I would not do it. Keeping rats in the same room as your snakes is just asking for trouble. Yes you can be careful not to handle the rats, and then handle your snakes. However accidents happen, you may find your self with a hungry boa or ball python in feeding mode. Wrapped around your hand. It's not pretty, trust me. If you can avoid it you will be better off.

Re: Keeping a rat and snakes in the same room?

Thanks, all. I'm getting some pet rats in a couple of days. My snakes are hook trained so, I think I'll be fine. Thanks, again.

I have never had a problem keeping my snakes and rodents housed in the same room. I've been doing it since I began keeping snakes in 2006. My snakes are no more aggressive and their feeding response is normal. I currently keep 13 snakes, 5 rats, and 5 mice in the same room. No issues. I try not to handle the rodents the same day I handle snakes unless I'm feeding and I always wash my hands between species.
    Under Construction.....

No problems here. Rodents one side reptiles the other side. With hand cleaner everywhere.
