Small boas

For my second snake I want to get a Boa. I want something a little larger than my ball python but it won't be able to hurt my cat or twenty pound dog if it got out. I know people are going to say don't let it get out but we all know it happens to the best keepers. As of now I'm leaning towards a Brazilian Rainbow Boa but I always loved red tail boas and I had one when I was a kid. Is there a red tail boa with the cream and red tails that fit my description of what I am looking for ? I know of Hog Islands but they don't have the pretty tails.

Male BCI red tails don't get too big. They get about 5-6 feet long and are super easy going. I have a 10 pound dog and I don't worry about my boa "getting " her.

This picture is a little old but this is my boy.





He has had a few sheds by this point but I don't have a new picture. He is a khal line sunglow BCI.

Can you keep multiple boas in one enclosure?

I think that my little Hog Island has a beautiful tail (as well as the rest of her body!).

For BCI look at locality boas like Hog Island, Sonoran, or Tarahumara.

Non-BCI: Dumerils boa, Dominican Red Mountain Boa, Madagascar Ground Boa, Brazilian Rainbow Boa.

I'm leaning towards the rainbow. The more I'm told that they calm down the more interested I am in them.

They do settle but much like corn snakes they're quite active while being handled.

I also have four Dumerils boas and once in-hand they tend to just hang on and stay put.

I thought dumerils get pretty big?

I have a male ball python right now so I don't want anything that will get much bigger and stronger than a female ball python. A little longer is ok.

At just over six feet both of my adult BRB's are about half a foot longer than my adult male Dum, but the Dum is a much thicker, more heavy-bodied snake.

My concern is that even a male Dumerils or Redtail is pretty strong. At 7' it could do harm to my cat. A 7' rainbow is a smaller snake.

I would get a Surinam Red tail male if I knew it couldn't harm my cat.
