    Ball not using hide?

One of my snakes insists on staying on top of her hide as opposed to using it to hide. Husbandry is good, she eats like a champ, and even seems comfortable. I think it may be bothering me more than her.
    Is this behavior relatively normal?

Do you have a laserthermo to check the temp in there? The top might be warmer than the inside or too warm on the inside.

When my guy leaves his warm hide, it's usually because he just pooped

I think her hide may make her feel exposed. I dropped it and cracked it when cleaning so maybe thats it? It now has a lot of exposure
I use a temp gun for my temperatures and everything is ideal

how new is she to the enclosure? i litteraly just got my first snakes last week so obviously im not experienced at all yet but i thought i had the same problem with one, from what i read it may be exploration. the same girl just pushed her hide (foam meat tray) to the middle.

She's been with me a little over a month. It could be that!

My adult just spent the last 6 weeks out of her hide.

I work at home and have sleeping issues, or lack thereof, so I constantly check on her whenever I walk by her room. So I KNOW if she has moved or not.

She has been mostly staying on the cool side, would thermoregulate from time to time.

Some days just her neck and head are on top of the hide. Inside is clean.

Just yesterday she went inside her hide on the cool side for the first time in 6 weeks plus. I just checked on her and she hasn't moved.

All I can say with confidence concerning my snake is, I can expect her to mix it up now and then.

Are you using a tub or something else with an opaque top? I wonder if sometimes that may be enough to make them feel secure without actually being in a hide.

Yeah I'm using a tub on a rack but I give her a hide just in case

    Re: Ball not using hide?

i think that may be it, as wouldnt a rack with closed sides be like a cave for them? nice and dark and secluded. both of mine have been on top of their hides but only for a little bit. i was watching a video and this guy pulled his tubs out and some were under the hide and others were on top. what kind of hide is it? i had to switch my naturalistic rock hide to a foam meat tray because the rock hide didnt give access to the entire hot spot whereas the square tray allows for complete hotspot contact. i caught her behind the rock. also, belly heat or back heat?

again im only 3 days experienced so dont take my words as gospel by any means.

It's belly heat with an exoterra rock hide. Maybe her housing already feels secure? Like I said, she's eating fine and doesn't appear distressed
