How long till i need to upgrade my cage? And 20 or 40 gallon?

Right now, I'm using a 15 gallon for my 8 week old female. She is growing like a weed and is a bottomless pit when it comes to food. She eats every 3 days easily and has gone from 102 grams when I got her to 138 grams in 2 weeks. My question is it is starting to look like the 15 gallon is getting small so next week, I'm debating on a 20 gallon long(30x12) or a 40 gallon(36x18). I eventually will get her either an Animal Plastics or give her my red tails 48x23x14 Proline sometime around the end of next summer when I upgrade my red tail to 5 or 6ft cage. I'm mostly just wondering from those who have had baby girls, how fast do they grow and will she last in a 20 gallon long till end of next summer possibly fall or should I just go for the 40 gallon now and be completely safe for sure? Thanks.

I put Prec in her xterra 36x2x2 at 6 months and just cluttered it up a lot. She spends all night exploring.


My juvenile and males are in a iris 70 rack and breeder girls will go in a Iris 90 rack when I build it. I put the tubs sideways for my viewing pleasure since I'm going to be small time good quality hobby breeder.

A 40gal will work but as mentioned it will need nice hides and other things making the snake feel secure as it moves through the cage. I raised my BP in a 40 gallon and she has always done well and is one of my best feeders.

If your grand plan is to only use this temporarily I would suggest you start cruising Craigslist for tanks and cages. You can run across some really cheap. Also know that Petco will do $1 a gallon deals every so often so you may want to look out for that.

I was just going to mention the Petco deal myself. I went into my local store for something else, and they happened to be running their $1 per gallon sale on tanks. So, in addition for what I was there for (I don't remember what it was) I got a 40 gallon tank and lid.

Yeah ill probably go with the 40 gallon. Then ill just throw some more hides in there. Funny part is I bought this really nice sandstone hide which was perfect for her and she ended going in it once and actually prefers a small little cardboard computer parts box I had laying around lol. I even switched them around from hot to cold and she still loved that cardboard box. So I just took the sandstone one back and threw in another cardboard box one since she has a fetish for cardboard

Did you take a sawzall, and chop a closet so that xterra would fit ??

Well I was just wandering around pet shops today and found a new Zilla Critter cage for $20 at Petco. Its 36x18x12, 30 gallon. Couldn't pass it up so picked that up. Should last my little girl a year or so. Made me some covers for the screen top out of the box the cage came in. Just cut the sizes I wanted and wrapped them in Tin foil and set them on top of the screen. Works pretty good except now I need a bigger water dish since the one I have now is fit for the 15 gallon tank. Also think ill do the burlap cinch craft bags with moss like someone posted here. Seemed like a great idea to raise humidity.
