    Totally stuck shed?

So I bought a new girl last week and got her on Friday and was told she was in shed. Saturday night, she was out of her hide and I noticed that her old head/face skin had broken open but that the rest of her body still had the old skin on it. It's now Monday evening and she still hasn't sloughed off the old skin. This doesn't really seem normal to me, though I could just be worrying. Anyone else ever deal with this?

    Re: Totally stuck shed?

Your humidity is way too low! Put the snake in a closed Sterilite tub with a couple inches of water for 30 minutes or so. That will loosen the shed.

Your BP will normally need humidity levels around 55 - 60%. During shed it needs to be bumped up to 70%.

What is your set up like? Do you have a thermometer/hygrometer to measure temps and humidity? What are you using for heat?

I use a 32Qt Sterilite tub, heat tape for belly heat hooked to a stat. I keep it between 50% and 60% humidity. 80ish ambient temp. I use an acurite termometer/hygrometer for temps and humidity. I also regularly check with a IR thermometer to make sure everything is good. I've had her for all of 3 days, so I'm pretty sure the issue was from the guy I bought her from. I tried soaking her, but it didn't seem to do anything.

    Re: Totally stuck shed?

Try adding some damp moss to the cage, and bump up the humidity.

While the dial is saying that the humidity is within an acceptable range, your snake's stuck shed indicates that it is not. Soak her in lukewarm water for about 10 minutes at a time at least once a day for a while and see if that helps. If one soak does not get it off easily, it sounds like she was kept too dry for too long while she was getting ready to shed, and it will likely take several soakings and extended high humidity in the tub for her to get her skin back to normal.
