Set the herpstat to 84*F, wait a bit, and re-check the temps.

But shouldn't the temp be what is displayed on the herpstat?

Herpstats can be recalibrated from what I am told, but I don't know how.

Also where are you putting your probe? It should be in the tank over the heat tape(the glass separating the two). The tape needs to heat that spot to the temp you pick so the tape itself is gonna be hotter then the reading from in the tank.

I was told to never put the probe in bins... Its outside the bin on the heat tape

Not necessarily. If the probe is just sitting on the heat tape, it could be warm on one side but cool from the air on the other.

    1. I would play with the set point on the t-stat. Raise and lower it to make sure the unit is cutting on and off and not just staying on.
    2. Assuming it's working just play with the set point and measure the temp at the hot spot until you have it working at a desirable range.
For example if, when set at 88 the actual temp is 95, lower the set point to 83 or so and see is you end up around 90 on the actual temp.
    3. For measuring actual temps, I'm hoping you're using something accurate. (IR Heat gun) But that's your call.
    4. The main thing is just to make sure the t-stat is coming on and off. Then regardless of where your probe is situated you can compensate for differences between set point and actual temp.

    0.1 Champagne (Calysto)
    0.1 Spider (Freya)
    0.1 Mojave (Azhara)

    1.0 Normal (Xerxes)

Im using an IR temp gun to measure the heat tape... It seems that when the temp goes below 88 the stat applies power and the heat tape gets to 95 but now it seems to be holding temp... Stats at 88 and heat tape is at 88 now...

Yea, forgot that that one is proportional. So the on/off thing is irrelevant. It should more or less hold where it's set at. You can still adjust the set point if you continue to have issues.

But it seems like its just taking a little while to balance out.
