    Thermostat questions

Hello! I've been seeing stuff on the importance of thermostats lately and Im wondering if the hydro farm thermostat is good choice to go with. I have 40 gallon tank with one uth(not sure size right now but I can check later). I'm not trying to go cheap on the thermostat just curious on what a good cheaper one is. Also what's a good bulb for 24/7 use and wattage. Thanks in advance!!

    First the bulb question.

Red is your best 24/7 choice. As for watt that depends on the room temp and temp required. I have a 40 gallon in my living room that stays 68. I have a uth, a 100watt che on the warm side, and a 60 watt bulb on the cool side. I use lamp stands to keep my fixtures at the optimal height to give the hotspot and heat cone I want. You might have to do some tweaking with different bulbs or buy a larger bulb and get a dimmer so you can turn it down and adjust it to where you need it.

    As for the tstat.

It that is all you can afford it is better than nothing and will work. I no longer recommend them since the one I had failed in three months. I now suggest spending what you can and get the best you can right out of the gate. I like Spyder Robotics Herpstat. I have a two Herpstat 1, a 2, and a 4 and they have worked flawlessly for me. They have the Herpstat Intro that are $99 but for a couple more dollars I think the Herpstat 1 is worth the money at $115-139 as you get some more features.

Right now they are doing 10% off for summer. http://spyderrobotics.com/

Many people also use these with good results but I have never had one.

You should also check around on Fauna and other classifieds for used tstats. I have bought 3 of mine slightly used. People sell them when down sizing, upgrading, or whatever but there are deals to be had. Keep an eye out.

The hydro foam is good for short term, but in the end you get what you pay for. I highly recommend investing in a quality thermostat. The herpstat sold by http://www.spyderrobotics.com are the best around in my eye.

I was the same way, I didn't want to spend a fortune but weighed out my options. I went with the Herp 4 and its working out great. I was going to get the ve 2 and was looking into the herp 2 and they were both similar but I was looking long term. If I breed I will need an incubator and another rack system. So for me the herp 4 was my best option as it can control up to 4 units at the same time. The VE2 was 199.00 and the herp 4 was 350.00 so basically I got 4 stats cheaper than buying 2 dual stats. So weigh out your options and think long term. What might be more out of pocket now may save out of pocket later.

I like the way you think. That's why I got my 4 but wouldn't you know it that wasn't enough. I will probably end up with a few more 4s before we are all said and done.
